After receiving standing ovations in Zagreb, Liverpool, Zurich, Berlin, and Amsterdam, BEAUTY AND THE BEAST debuts in New York for ONE NIGHT ONLY at Abrons Arts Center, April 19th at 8 P.M. This bizarrely romantic love story between New York downtown performance art queen JULIE ATLAS MUZ and U.K.s celebrated disabled entertainer MAT FRASER, is an absurdist reclamation of a well known story recently made famous by Disney. The play promotes a message of inclusive and harmonious living between disabled and non-disabled people that inspires audiences to laugh, cry and question: WHO IS TRULY BEASTLY AND WHO IS BEAUTIFUL?
Be prepared to feel outrageous love in this thought provoking show as Fraser and Muz reveal their fantasy world by performing beastly and beautiful acts of love for you.
They chose Abrons Arts Center for this show because its accessible for adults with disabilities and supports work of this inclusive nature.
BEAUTY AND THE BEAST (written by JULIE ATLAS MUZ and MAT FRASER) will be performed one night only, Monday, April 19, 2010 at 8 PM at ABRONS ARTS CENTER (466 Grand Street, at Pitt Street). Tickets are $20. VIP tickets are available for $50.00 and include priority seating, a signed poster and roses to throw for the final scene. Tickets are available at http://www.abronsartscenter.org
ABOUT THE ARTISTS
Julie Atlas Muz Miss Coney Island(2006) and Miss Exotic World (2006) is a New York based artist who in the past two years has been anywhere but home. Straight from headlining the Australian Burlesque Ball, Muz is awaiting the Cannes premier of Tournee, a French film in which she plays a stylized version of herself in all her burlesque glory. Choreographing a dance solo for Kim Catrall in Detroit, fraternizing with artists in Ho Chi Minh City as part of the Flying Circus Residency, playing Vivienne Leigh as Blanche DuBois in North Carolina and being named one of Time Outs most fashionable New Yorkers, Muz is thrilled to be playing on her home turf with this heartfelt show. A Whitney Biennial Artist, A Valencia Biennial Artist, Ethyl Eichelberger Award Recipient, and Lambent Fellow, Muz has the balls to back up NY Times quote "the bemused blonde of downtown." julieatlasmuz.com
Mat Fraser is arguably the U.K.s best known disabled entertainer. His recent TV and feature film credits include: Cast Offs, Holby City, Metrosexuality, Quills, Helen Of Troy, and Chemical Wedding, plus numerous documentaries and award-winning plays such as Sealboy: Freak and Thalidomide!! A Musical. He has just played the lead in the controversial new cripsloitation and action film Unarmed But Dangerous. In addition to being an award winning actor, Mat is also a popular international cabaret host and performance artist. His British wit, subversive lack of political correctness around disability, the freak sideshow style, his playful sexuality, songs, comedy and outrageous onstage antics have all added to his notoriety. He is the title holder of the Erotic Award (U.K.) for Best Male Striptease artist 2007. www.matfraser.co.uk
